January Was National Eye Care Month
How long has it been since your last eye exam?
If you’re like me it has probably been awhile. I’m way overdue. Looking back, I used to have my eyes examined every other year, then I retired. Suddenly it has been 5 years since my last exam.
Depending on your age group the American Optometric Association has established exam intervals.
Beginning with your children, they advise an initial exam when they turn 6 months of age, then schedule regular exams every two years beginning at age 3.
If you are an adult between the ages of 18 and 40 the recommendation is to have your eyes examined every 2 to 3 years. If you are between 41 and 60, AOA recommends an exam every 2 years. After the age of 61 you should get an exam every year.
There are exceptions to every rule however. If you have a medical condition such as diabetes or high blood pressure, etc., ask your doctor to suggest an interval specific to your condition.
You should consult a qualified doctor, one who can diagnose an eye disease and give advice about treatment based on the risks and benefits of each.
Most of us have heard of common conditions such as glaucoma, but I know from experience that it is absolutely amazing what an eye exam can reveal concerning your health.
Hope this article gives you some insight as to how often we should focus on our eyesight. The miracle of sight is precious and we should treat it as such.
If it’s been a while since you last had an eye exam, now might be a good time to schedule one. I just did.
Till next time, take care.
